Why Dog-Friendly Is No Longer Optional for Campsites

Over 30% of UK campers travel with a dog. If your site isn't dog-friendly, or isn't shouting about it, you're missing a huge chunk of the market.

Dog ownership in the UK has surged in recent years, with an estimated 12 million dogs now living in British households. The camping and glamping industry is feeling the impact. More than ever, travellers are choosing destinations based on whether their four-legged family member is welcome.

For campsites and glamping businesses, being dog-friendly isn't just a nice-to-have anymore - it's a competitive necessity. Dog-friendly campsite marketing is one of the fastest-growing niches in outdoor hospitality, and the campsites that do it well are reaping the rewards.

The numbers speak for themselves

Research from the Kennel Club and Pitchup.com suggests that over a third of UK campers travel with a dog. That's a huge segment of the market. And these travellers are often willing to pay more for dog-friendly accommodation, stay longer, and return more frequently.

Searches for 'dog-friendly camping UK', 'dog-friendly glamping', and 'camping with dogs' have grown consistently year-on-year. If your campsite website isn't optimised for these keywords, you're invisible to a massive audience.

What dog-friendly really means

It's not enough to just 'allow' dogs. The best dog-friendly campsites actively cater to them and market their dog-friendly credentials as a core part of their brand. Think about:

  • Enclosed areas or designated off-lead spaces where dogs can run safely.
  • Water bowls at communal areas and fresh water stations around the site.
  • Dog wash stations - even a simple hose and towel area makes a huge difference.
  • Information about local dog-friendly walks, pubs, beaches, and attractions.
  • A welcome pack for dogs: a treat, poo bags, a local walk map, and a 'good boy/girl' bandana.
  • Clear rules that make all guests feel comfortable - both dog owners and non-dog owners.

Marketing your dog-friendly credentials

If you're dog-friendly, make it impossible to miss. Feature dogs prominently on your website homepage, in your social media content, and in your email marketing campaigns. Use hashtags like #dogfriendlycamping, #campingwithdogs, and #dogfriendlyUK to reach targeted audiences on Instagram and TikTok.

Encourage guests to share photos of their dogs at your site. User-generated content featuring cute dogs is social media gold - it drives engagement, builds community, and attracts new bookings from fellow dog owners.

Consider creating a dedicated 'Dog-Friendly' page on your website, optimised for search terms like 'dog-friendly camping [your area]'. This is a high-intent keyword - people searching for it are actively looking to book.

Dog owners are some of the most loyal and vocal customers you'll find. Win them over, and they'll do your campsite marketing for you.
